David Bailey Breaks Out as Jets Beat Browns in Rainy MetLife Battle

The New York Jets needed a win, and on a rain-soaked afternoon at MetLife Stadium, their defense made sure they got one.
New York defeated the Cleveland Browns 17–12 on October 11, improving to 2–3 and snapping a three-game losing streak. It was a sloppy, tightly contested Week 5 matchup, but the Jets found a way to finish after letting earlier opportunities slip away.
The biggest reason was David Bailey.

The No. 2 overall pick delivered his breakout NFL performance, recording three of the Jets’ eight sacks of Deshaun Watson. Bailey showed the kind of disruptive ability that made him such an important investment for this defense. With the Jets looking for new cornerstones following the departures of Sauce Gardner and Quincy Williams, this was an encouraging glimpse of what he can become.
In my view, without Bailey’s performance, the Jets do not win this game. Cleveland repeatedly found itself behind the chains, and New York’s pressure kept Watson from finding a consistent rhythm.
The Browns’ ground game offered little relief. Quinshon Judkins managed just 44 yards on 14 carries, while Watson finished 15-for-33 for 155 yards and a touchdown. Between the weather and the relentless pass rush, Cleveland struggled to sustain drives.
On the other side, Braelon Allen gave the Jets the offensive lift they needed. Filling in for the injured Breece Hall, Allen rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. In conditions that made throwing difficult, his ability to keep the offense moving was essential.
Geno Smith completed 17 of 30 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown. Garrett Wilson was his biggest weapon, catching seven passes for 104 yards and a score. Wilson’s opening-drive touchdown gave New York an early lead, but the offense struggled to turn that start into separation.

The fourth quarter brought the decisive swings.
Jason Sanders’ 54-yard field goal extended the Jets’ lead to 10–6. Cleveland answered when Watson found Denzel Boston for a 29-yard touchdown with 6:15 remaining. A missed extra point left the Browns ahead 12–10.
For a moment, it looked as if another close game might get away from New York. Smith lost a fumble, giving Cleveland a chance to protect its lead. But the Jets’ defense forced a three-and-out, and the Browns then made the mistake that changed everything.
Punter Corey Bojorquez could not handle the snap, and Trevin Wallace recovered at Cleveland’s 23-yard line. Three plays later, Allen broke loose for a 22-yard touchdown run, putting the Jets ahead 17–12.

The defense finished the job. On Cleveland’s final possession, Will McDonald IV strip-sacked Watson and recovered the ball, recording New York’s eighth sack and ending the Browns’ comeback hopes.

Both teams also left with injury concerns. Browns rookie receiver KC Concepcion exited after a helmet-to-helmet hit from Minkah Fitzpatrick. Jets rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq suffered a concussion, and Cleveland running back Raheim Sanders sustained a hip injury. Sanders was subsequently placed on injured reserve on October 13.
Being there, the rain was a huge part of the experience. It made an already physical game messy, and neither offense looked comfortable for long. But when the Jets finally pulled it out, the fans’ relief was obvious. After the frustration of recent losses, they had something to celebrate.

Cleveland fell to 3–2 and will host Baltimore next. The Jets head to New England for a rivalry matchup with a chance to reach .500.
Calling a Week 5 game a must-win can sound dramatic, but for New York, this felt close to one. The Jets needed to stop the slide and keep their season within reach. Bailey, Allen, and a defense that refused to give in helped them do exactly that.
